ONE CUMBRIA UPDATE SPRING TERM 2024

It is with profound sadness that we pay our respects to Alison Wilkinson, who passed away on Saturday 10th February 2024. Alison was a much-loved colleague and inspiration to many. She helped to shape and develop One Cumbria Teaching School Hub from the very beginning and her wit, wisdom and experience were a shining, guiding light. A true believer and ambassador for system leadership, she encouraged and inspired all she met. We will miss her greatly.

REDESIGNATION OF ALL TEACHING SCHOOL HUBS

All Teaching School Hubs have to apply for redesignation.

One Cumbria has met all KPIs over the last 2.5 years and would like to build on the work carried out around teacher development, so has applied for redesignation.

Outcomes are announced in February 2024 (exact date to be confirmed)

If redesignated, funding will be granted for four more years of delivery.

OUR STAFFING STRUCTURE

The Director of the Teaching School Hub, is Judith Schafer. Judith has overall strategic overview of the Hub and works with our Board of Trustees to ensure we are meeting the needs of our stakeholders and schools.

Tina Beddoe is the Deputy Director and under Judith’s guidance manages the operational aspects of the Hub, as well as leading on ECF and NPQs.

Fiona Davidson joined the team as TSH Manager in January. Fiona covers administrative and business duties across the Hub.

Jacqui Percival is the ITT Lead and delivers our current ITT provision as well as developing the provision for September 2024. We have worked in partnership with Alison Wilkinson to develop an ambitious curriculum that meets the new ITT requirements for September 2025.

Jacqui Wilson is the Appropriate Body Lead and works alongside AB partners in the south of the county to quality assure induction of Early Career Teachers.

Contact details for everyone are at the end of this update.

THE GOLDEN THREAD OF TEACHER DEVELOPMENT

INITIAL TEACHER TRAINING

One Cumbria TSH is the only Cumbria based accredited provider.

One Cumbria SCITT is now recruiting for September 24 start, along with our Delivery Partners: Carlisle School Alliance and Carmel Teacher Training Partnership.

Apprenticeship route – partnering with Ripley SCITT to offer this from July 2025

The ITT curriculum, written by Alison Wilkinson, is now being developed further by a team of curriculum writers who are looking at subject and phase specificity.

We provide in person seminars for Year 1 ECTs around the county. For those who cannot make these seminars there are online sessions too.

The Year 2 programme continues to be phase and subject specific and sessions are held in Penrith.

There are three cohorts per academic year – at the beginning of each term.

NPQ for SENCOs

One Cumbria will be offering the NPQ for SENCOs. This leadership level NPQ will become the mandatory qualification for SENCOs from September 2024, replacing the NASENCO qualification.

Teaching of the NPQ for SENCOs will begin in Autumn 2024. One Cumbria is working with both Cumberland and  Westmorland and Furness Council to ensure the NPQ meets the requirements of SENCos across our region.

Requirements for SENCOs:

  • SENCOs who have already obtained the NASENCO will not need to complete the new NPQ.

From September 2024, all SENCOs and aspiring SENCOs will:

  • need to take the NPQ if they have not completed or started the NASENCO
  • still need to complete training within 3 years of appointment –  schools and SENCOs must ensure they enrol on training that will meet this requirement

SENCOs appointed before 1 September 2009 will not be required to take the NPQ but will be expected to ensure compliance with the regulations.

ONE CUMBRIA APPROPRIATE BODY

Appropriate bodies are the organisations that quality-assure statutory teacher induction.

We use an online system called MOSAIC for reporting purposes.
